What is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic Dance is inspired by the fundamental human desire to join together in community to dance and play music. It is a freeform dance experience that’s sometimes called a ‘moving meditation’. The intention is to be present and connect to what’s arising moment-to-moment - allowing that to move you in whatever way feels right for you and your body.

Our bodies are born with rhythm: our heartbeats, our brain waves, our cycles of sleep, growth, and fertility. Our bodies also have a natural response to external rhythms: cycles of day and night, seasons, and to drum beats and musical instruments. Through free movement and dance we can tune into these rhythms, reconnect to our bodies’ natural cycles, and regulate our nervous systems.

At an Ecstatic Dance you may move through gentle moments that soften and relax; energetic movements that allow for cathartic release; deep stretching to relieve stress and tension; and stillness that facilitates rest and contemplation.

An Ecstatic Dance is a movement journey that can open us to more stillness, peace, joy, understanding, and compassion. Sometimes it can seem that our lives run on autopilot: we may not be listening to the messages our body sends through sensations like tiredness and pain. When those voices are ignored, emotion, thought, and illness can be suppressed. We 'suddenly' become ill, stressed, or breakdown. Ecstatic Dance provides the opportunity to tune in to our body, to move with what it is telling us, and discover more of ourselves.
